Brain and Behavior

Cognitive neuroscience is the study of groups of neurons working in concert to encode higher order information or to control behavior. The cognitive issues being addressed at Utah include the nature of attention, object recognition, learning and memory. For example, researchers are studying the tuning of cells in vision and hearing; others are studying how the brain takes visual information and determines the spatial location of the animal in a complex environment; and finally, others are studying how neurotransmitters and potent neuroactive drugs alter the mental state of an individual. Work of this type is also leading to the development of somatosensory, visual and auditory prostheses.
